3 Reasons why SMBs are Choosing VoIP over POTs lines.

As Small Business VoIP and residential VoIP providers become more and more mainstream, we are seeing a slow but steady decline in the number of new POTS (plain old Telephone Service) lines decline more and more. In fact, in 2007, new VoIP telephone lines outpaced new POTS line installations for the first time in U.S. history. This trend will continue well into the future as the small business VoIP providers becomes more and more cost effective and flexible for its dedicated end users.

In this article, I will outline 3 main reasons why Small Business VoIP is tending to become the phone lines of choice for the Small to Medium Businesses (SMBs) in the U.S.

1) Costs Savings- It is not a secret anymore that the cost of a Hosted Small Business VoIP line is less expensive than the cost of a small business POTS line. The long distance calls are less expensive because they are bypassing the Local Exchange Carrier (LEC) and long distance company saving almost 2/3 of the cost of all long distance calls. The calls are translated into digital packets and sent over the internet, reassembled back into a sound, and carried to their final destination, the phone number you have dialed. This model is not only more economical for the small business company, but the margins for the small business VoIP providers are much larger as well. Everybody wins in this situation.

2) Scalability- Businesses today seem to change in an instant. Employees come and go like the wind. If VoIP over WiFi starts to grow some roots in certain large, dense markets then VoIP will also start to work on putting a dent into the cell phone market as well.
