3 Reasons why SMBs are Choosing VoIP over POTs lines.

by Chris Landry

As Small Business VoIP and residential VoIP providers become more and more mainstream, we are seeing a slow but steady decline in the number of new POTS (plain old Telephone Service) lines decline more and more. In fact, in 2007, new VoIP telephone lines outpaced new POTS line installations for the first time in U.S. history. This trend will continue well into the future as the small business VoIP providers becomes more and more cost effective and flexible for its dedicated end users.

In this article, I will outline 3 main reasons why Small Business VoIP is tending to become the phone lines of choice for the Small to Medium Businesses (SMBs) in the U.S.

2) Scalability- Businesses today seem to change in an instant. Employees come and go like the wind. Employees are more and more mobile than ever and VoIP companies have answered that call with resounding success. With today?s small business VoIP providers, businesses can make changes to their phone systems virtually instantaneously. They can add a number here, change a number there, and delete a number all within the matter of minutes. Employees can now have just one phone number. With the Find Me/Follow Me features on the VoIP phone systems, clients can contact who they are looking for with a single phone number whether the employee is in the office or not.

3) Greater Employee Productivity- By implementing a Small Business VoIP solution into an office setting, the employees of that business tend to become more productive. It is easier and faster for an employee who utilizes a VoIP solution to transfer calls, record calls, email voice messages, broadcast messages, looking up a number, dialing a number, etc. It is been proven that an employee using unified messaging is more efficient than one not using that technology.

As we move further and further into the 21st century, we will see POTs lines become more and more rare. I don?t believe they are going anywhere for a while, but SMBs are opting to go the small business VoIP route for the reasons spelled out above. It will be interesting to see how VoIP and WiFi evolves over the next decade or so. If VoIP over WiFi starts to grow some roots in certain large, dense markets then VoIP will also start to work on putting a dent into the cell phone market as well.
